Practically everyone who tries to lose weight suffers from salt and/or sugar cravings. Did you know some foods help battle those desires? Make note of what some of these foods are for the next time the urge strikes you–and as you know, it can strike you hard.
A small scoop of low-fat frozen vanilla yogurt topped with fruit (strawberries or blueberries are excellent this way) is an excellent way to avoid eating less healthy sweets. It isn’t too high in sugar content and if you limit yourself to just that one scoop the calorie content isn’t ridiculously high. In addition, the fruit served on top will add fiber, which staves off hunger for a much longer period than snacks without any.
Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, plus it’s just plain rich, too. Just a small piece–an ounce or two–is plenty, and will curb any sugar cravings you’ve been suffering from. Make sure you choose a brand that features at least 70% real cocoa for the best results.
Pistachios are great for when you feel the need to eat something salty. They are higher in antioxidants than any other nut, and since you have to work to get them out of their shells, you’re not as likely to eat your fill.
Mini whole wheat pretzels are good options for times when you’re craving salt. A handful provides that crunch and salt you crave without the fat and extra calories in snacks like chips.
Pick up one or more of these snack options the next time you go to the grocery store. By planning, you’ll be prepared for the next time a craving strikes. If you satiate those cravings with one of these snack options instead of high-fat or high-calorie options, you’ll stay full longer and you’ll help keep those extra pounds at bay.
